Public Act 16-189, An Act Concerning Student Data Privacy, addresses the provision of personally identifiable student information to individuals or entities outside of West Hartford Public Schools. While we are vigilant about maintaining student confidentiality under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), this Connecticut law adds a layer of requirements to ensure student privacy. Public Act 16-189 sets forth minimum privacy and contractual standards for all parties involved in the creation, use, or handling of student data. If you request an app for your iPad(s) or software for another device, please expect that it will take some time to hear back from the vendor(s) and lawyers to confirm compliance with Public Act 16-189. If a teacher is interested in using an app that is already available in Meraki, simply download it and begin using it.

Requests for free apps (not already in Meraki) and other software

If you are a teacher who wants a free app/software that is not included in your Meraki Apps or already on your device, just follow these steps:

  • Submit a request to HelpDesk and choose Software Request as the problem type. In step 4, please include:

    • Name of the app

    • Name of the app developer

    • Rationale and/or curricular importance

  • Use separate Helpdesk tickets for each software request if requesting more than one program.
  • The building tech will load the free app to Meraki on your iPad(s) or other device and you will receive an email from Help Desk notifying you when the request is complete.

  • For iPads, open the Meraki app and download your requested app.

Requests for paid apps (not already in Meraki) and other software

If you are a teacher who wants a paid app that is not included in your Meraki Apps or already on your device, talk with your building administrator with your purchase request plans. If the plan is supported:

  • Submit a request to HelpDesk and choose Software Request as the problem type. In step 4, please include:

    • Name of the app and the name of the app developer

    • Rationale and/or curricular importance

    • Number of copies requested

    • Identity which iPads or devices will receive the paid apps.

    • Identify where the funds are coming from. Include the school code, program code, object code (see school secretary if necessary).

  • Use separate Helpdesk tickets for each software request if requesting more than one program.

Example request:

I am requesting 45 copies of BookCreator by RedJumper to use for K Writing Unit 3 and for our reflections on growth in reading and math for the school year. The apps will go on the 25 iPads on the Kindergarten iPad cart, and 20 on the iPads in the first grade classrooms. The budget codes for this purchase are: index: 2345, program: 1234, object: 5676

  • The building tech will load the free app to Meraki on your iPad(s) or other devices and you will receive an email from Help Desk notifying you when the request is complete.

  • For iPads, open the Meraki app and download your requested app.
