Summer Reading

Welcome (or welcome back) to Summer Adventures!

We want you to have fun while staying educationally active during the summer months. Each Monday, I will send out an email for you and your family.  Enjoy!

Week 8: Thanks to the PTO, grants from the Foundation for West Hartford Public Schools and a strong commitment from our staff, Webster Hill will be unveiling our Maker Space this year.  In the spirit of creativity, create something with markers, crayons, origami, construction paper, blocks, or something entirely unique and creative.  Take a picture and email it to me.  I’d love to see what you made!

I hope you can join Mrs. Motyka on August 17 and me on August 24 on the playground between 4:00 and 5:00.  This is an informal opportunity to come play and meet or reconnect with others as the school year approaches.

You should have received your class placement information.  To respect privacy and continue to improve safety measures, we no longer send out class lists in our summer mailing.

Week 7: Take a trip around the world this week through music.  Go into Youtube and type in “music from ___.”  Choose countries from each continent and listen for the different instruments and rhythms.  Do you hear similarities?  Differences?  You can play music during dinner time or in your car rides this week.  Enjoy!

Week 6: Whether your child loves or detests writing, help them see that writing can be fun, exciting, meaningful, and/or powerful if they find the right avenue, purpose or audience.  Work together on a project or suggest a writing activity:

  • Write a poem (Poems can be funny, scary, or reflective and don’t have to follow common writing conventions.  Allow your child to be creative.)
  • Write/create a comic
  • Write a letter.  Use the U.S. mail and help your child learn where to affix a stamp, write a return address and understand what is included in writing out someone’s address.
  • Write a journal entry
  • Write a letter to the editor
  • Write a comedy routine and then perform it
  • Have them be “Weird Al” and write a song parody (I used to do this all the time)
  • Write a letter to your child's upcoming teacher and tell him/her all about themselves or about their summer.
  • Write a letter to last year’s teacher, their favorite teacher, or favorite principal J
  • If they are very young, have them draw a picture and label it
  • If they are very young, have them dictate a letter to you.  When done, mail their thoughts to a loved one (or hang it on the fridge).

Remember that your child’s writing is his or her writing.  Don’t make too many suggestions and don’t steal their voice.  Motivate them to write and then let them go.

For those about to write, we salute you (80's reference).

Make sure to encourage daily reading and keep reading to your child over the summer!
